Healing Trauma in a safe way
It may be that when you hear the word ‘trauma’ that you think it applies to someone else and not to yourself. The reality is that trauma is probably the number one condition that affects the most people on the planet. All sorts of situations in life can lead to trauma and millions of people suffer from it. The good news is that it can be treated and we can recover. Trauma can be caused by so many different things and most of us have experienced trauma in the early stages of our development in the womb and are largely unconscious of it. Yet it can be running our life and being passed on to our children. The energy of trauma is contagious and if you have traumatized parents, there is a high chance that you have been traumatized too by some degree. If a member of your family has been traumatized, it is likely that you will be affected and if you work with traumatized people then you are also at risk.
The effects of unresolved trauma can be devastating. It can affect our habits and outlook on life, leading to addictions and poor decision-making. It can take a toll on our family life and interpersonal relationships. It can trigger real physical pain, symptoms, and disease. And it can lead to a range of self-destructive behaviors. But trauma doesn’t have to be a life sentence.
There are some highly effective approaches to healing trauma, that doesn’t involve being distressed and having to relive the awful circumstances that caused the trauma. One of these approaches was developed by Dr. Peter Levine and is called Somatic Experiencing. This is one of the approaches that is used at Healing Waters Sanctuary in helping people get their lives back and live more authentically.
In the video below, Juliet Yelverton discusses with Dr. Estelle Gillingham how to safely resolve trauma.
