Exploring the Northern Spiritual Tradition
The Northern Tradition is a term which refers to the pre-Christian Heathen spirituality of Northern Europe (the Germanic, Scandinavian, Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon branches of our pagan family tree). I can introduce you to this tradition via two different options: one is to learn about the divinatory and transformational power of the Runes; and the second is to explore the Norse World Tree by shamanic journeying.
Five-Night Rune Wisdom Retreat
Includes 8 hours of experiential work with the Runes, following elements of the Northern Tradition. This retreat can be facilitated one-to-one or as a small group (up to four people). So a group of friends or colleagues can share the experience together. Group savings are available for this Retreat Package. Follow the link to find out how much you can save.
According to Norse mythology, the God Odin experienced an initiation upon the World Tree which altered his consciousness and showed him the mysteries of the cosmos, otherwise known as “the Runes”. Each rune has a shape to identify it called a stave. Runes are divination tools that help you understand your “Wyrd” – or the cause and effect at play in your situation.
When runes are picked “blind” from a bag and placed in a lay out, their meanings can be interpreted. However, the runes are more than abstract shapes that tell a story, they are also the carriers of an energy or a cosmic mystery. So rune energies can also be meditated with and used in healing.
The Runes are sacred tools that empower you. They encourage deeper engagement with and responsibility for your choices and actions. They help you to understand how you create your own experience and how you can influence better outcomes.
Notes and study-aids will be provided to help you consolidate your experience of workshop activities. Below is a sample of contents, which may vary according to client preference or teaching requirements.
Session One: We cover the myth concerning the runes’ discovery by Odin. By discussing the meaning of “Wyrd” and the Guardians of Wyrd, we will experiment with a three-rune reading. We will bear in mind the ethics involved in giving readings.
Session Two: We will build on our divination skills and work on a five-rune lay out that considers the different levels of consciousness. We will work energetically with runes that help to ground and protect us.
Session Three: Options are available. We can work with the Rune Year Wheel, a sacred circle formed by the aligning the runes with the directions and times of year. We can meditate on the rune associated with the timing of the retreat. Alternatively I can demonstrate ways to make runes and help you explore rune making ritual.
Session Four: for a Single Participant: A Runic Body Reading* combines rune divination and healing to assess and address blockages and strengths in the seven main chakras. Voice sound healing and rune channelling is then applied to each chakra as guided by the reading.
Session Four: for Group Participants: We will explore the rune meanings in our given names. Your first name is a sound signature attached to your incarnation. We can turn our names into a personalised runic sound meditation to bring transformational intent to the blocks in our current incarnations.
The following comments are from students of my public rune workshops:
“I gleaned a massive amount of information… but it was delivered in a very easy to digest, accessible way. I couldn’t recommend Rosemary’s teaching of this subject more highly. In a very short space of time, I learned how to mine an ancient seam of lode-bearing ore for myself, making this very self-empowering … she managed to plant a seed in me which will very quickly flower and fruit …”
Annie Easton, Author & Shaman
“It encompassed everything I had hoped for, now I am hungry for more. Fun, enlightening, informative, empowering. A great balance of hands-on activities, energy connections and historical background.”

Five-Night Exploring the Norse World Tree – A Shamanic Journeying Retreat
Including 8 hours of shamanic journeying practice, following elements of the Northern Tradition. This retreat can be facilitated one-to-one or as a small group (up to four people). So a group of friends or colleagues can share the experience together. Group savings are available for this retreat package. Follow the link to find out how much you can save.
At the heart of the Northern Tradition is a powerful symbol, The World Tree. This is the way our ancestors envisaged their reality and experience. Within the World Tree were the Nine Worlds. Each of these worlds had a distinct energetic nature of its own and it was within these nine worlds that the beings of Norse Mythology made their homes: the deities of higher consciousness, the fertility deities, humans, dwarves, elves and giants.
This Retreat will support you to visit some of these Nine Worlds to gain your own guidance about them. There may also be the opportunity to experience energy healing within these Nine Worlds.
Ideally, participants need to be able to journey into the spirit realms to the beat of the shamanic drum. If you are interested in this Retreat but do not know how to journey, please contact me to discuss possibilities. Additional sessions are available to help you try out the technique first (including Skype sessions). Alternatively, you may wish to consider booking my Shamanic Journeying and Power Animal Retreat, which teaches journeying and shamanic guide work in more detail.
Notes and aids will be provided to consolidate workshop activities. Session contents may vary according to teaching requirements.
Session One: We will explore the basic three-level structure of the World Tree and the energy that drives life within it – a fluid force called Wyrd. We will discuss three important female mythical beings called The Great Norns, who are the Guardians of Wyrd. We will journey to meet the oldest Norn known as Urd and ask her for wisdom.
Session Two: Eight of the Nine Worlds can be arranged into complementary pairs. In this session we journey to two of them: Asgard (the home of deities including the famous Gods Odin and Thor and their Goddess Wives Frigga and Sif); and Norse Hel (the home of Hella, Goddess-Giantess of the Norse Underworld). We will consider the levels of consciousness that these worlds may give us access to.
Session Three: We continue with our journeys to the different worlds and explore the realm of the Dwarves (magical metalsmiths) and the realm of the Light Elves, intuitive beings who may be akin to the fairy folk, or possibly angelic beings.
We investigate the world of the Nature Gods (Vanaheim) where we could meet the Goddess Freyja or her brother the God Freyr, deities of fertility, abundance and creativity. In contrast, a visit to the world of the Giants (Jotunheim) may introduce us to the challenging but necessary polar opposite, the forces of destruction and dissolution.
This Retreat has run previously as a public workshop and the following is one attendee’s experience of Exploring the Norse World Tree:
“It was awesome. It’s going to take me a while to digest it all! It’s one of the most beautifully rich in teaching courses I’ve ever done. I felt like a thirsty sponge … I was scared to take my eyes off you in case I missed something. I was both challenged and enlightened. I now have a new tool in my spiritual kit bag!”
